When we bought our house three years ago we were so focused on bigger tasks – like renovating the kitchen – that all we did in the bedrooms was just refreshing the walls with a coat of off-white paint. We simply didn’t have time to develop concepts for decorating the whole house at once before we moved in. And this is how our master bedroom looked like for those three years: bright and airy, but cold and unappealing.

We are actually glad that we waited a moment and had a chance to observe how this room changed at different times of the day and from season to season. It turned out that we got so much light through that south-facing window, especially in the winter when the sun is low, that we definitely had to balance the brightness with darker colours to make our bedroom a tranquil and peaceful oasis. We opted for deep and moody green paint in matte finish (Lafayette Green by Benjamin Moore) which is very soothing and easy on the eyes. White ceiling prevents a closed-in, cave-like vibe and helps maintain an airy feeling throughout the room. Natural wood tones and gold accents bring warmth to the space while linen textiles and light oriental rug make it cozy and restful.

This gorgeous mid-century modern dresser is an antique store find. We are absolutely in love with the warm golden tone of its walnut veneer.

Wall-mounted glass shadow boxes found in West Elm serve as jewelry display.

Our IKEA Malm bed was still in impeccable condition, so we didn’t feel the need to exchange it for something new. The idea of reusing and upcycling furniture is very close to our hearts, so we gave the bed a new life by upholstering the headboard to blend it with all the organic decor.

The art above the bed is one of Piotr’s photographs. The earthy tones of this mountain panorama taken in Iceland perfectly match the wood tones of the lamps and nightstands.

As there is a ton of natural light in this room, I needed to sew proper window treatments to control it. Translucent drapes with no lining filter the light without making the room too dingy. The roman shade though has blackout lining which makes the room completely dark – a great solution for those early summer mornings.
