Have you ever heard the golden advice to paint your walls neutral and just play with colourful accents? Then probably you instantly thought about a light shade of beige or gray paired with, let’s say, a couple of turquoise pillows. However, recently neutrals have been redefined, moving toward darker colours, including navy blue, deep green, and even charcoal. Modern design is focused more on how colours make us feel than how they look in a space. These moody hues make our homes cozier, and who doesn’t want their home to feel like a retreat? As trend designers predict, we’ll also see more natural wood in furniture and decor in coming years, which makes dark walls a perfect background.
We recently joined forces with an amazing Calgary artist, Mascha, and styled this room a few different ways to show how versatile a navy wall can be. It can fit with any decor style when presented with the right furniture and accessories. It can be paired with almost any colour. It plays well with other neutrals, and it grounds vibrant colours.
Painting this grid wall deep blue instantly added style to the room. To balance it, we used lots of ivory details: the rug, the curtains, the marble top coffee table, the light fixtures. Gold metal elements bring warmth to the space and the burnt orange sofa enlivens it. The star of the room, though, is the oversized “Rosehip” painting, which pulls everything together and is also reflected in our choice of accent pillows.
The photo below is a great example of how a different painting changes the overall mood of the room. Choosing a large statement piece of art is also a way to make the space feel bigger and calmer. Try to avoid gallery walls in small spaces, as they will clutter the room and bring it in.
Orange, turquoise and purple are a wonderful colour scheme, too!
But we decided to pair this bold and vivid painting of Moraine Lake with bright yellow sofa. So cheerful!
I couldn’t resist to wear this dress for the photo session, as it reflects the colours of the painting perfectly 🙂
Finally, a colour which looks incredibly appealing with dark blue: blush pink! We matched it with light gray, but as you can see in the photo some green accents would also work great here.
The artist herself!
We had so much fun styling this space! I hope you find this post inspirational!
